Hmmmm . . . sounds familiar!

Many many years ago a guy yelled into a microphone and the "Wilhelm scream" was born. It was originally recoded for a movie called "Distant Drums" released in 1951 and has been a part of a sound catalog ever since. This scream is especially prevalent in Spielberg movies, Ben Burtt projects, and anything George Lucas has ever touched. Movie goers keep your ears pealed because this sound turns up just about everywhere.

There are lots of stories about who was the screaming guy behind the sound but it is most likely a character actor named Sheb Wooley. He was in that film. You may also recognize his voice because he sang the song "Purple People Eater."
